New Approach for Using of Mentha longifolia L. and Citrus reticulata L. Essential Oils as Wood-Biofungicides: GC-MS, SEM, and MNDO Quantum Chemical Studies

Background: Fungi growing on wood cause deterioration of stored food materials or discoloration the itself, and search for new safe bioagents is recently needed. Methods: Essential oils (EOs) from aerial parts Mentha longifolia L. Citrus reticulata L., analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), were tested their antifungal activity vapor method against four common fungi, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, fumigatus, Fusarium culmorum, confirmed SEM examination as applied samples. Results: The most abundant compounds identified in EO M. menthone eucalyptol; C. EO, they β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide, β-elemene. EOs reticulata, at 500 250 µL/mL, showed potent flavus with 100% fungal mycelial inhibition growth (FMIG). EOs, 125 observed FMIG values 98% 95%, respectively, fumigatus. FMIG. F. culmorum completely inhibited (100% FMIG) µL/mL. Pinus roxburghii Sarg. Wood, treated zone 7.33 21.33 mm respectively. Conclusions: Both possessed good wood-biofungicide method, clearly shown examination. These activities suggest possible use natural preservatives.
